Upper back pain is very different than lower back pain. While the lower vertebra and the associated muscles main purpose is to support the body above the pelvis area, the upper vertebra are connected to the rib cage and support the chest region of your body.
One of the more common reasons for your upper back pain will be from irritation from the soft tissue around the spinal. This can be caused by a traumatic event like an automobile accident or a fall. There are even some that originate from an illness.
A persistent cough has been known to cause upper back pain due to the constant fierce expansion of the rib cage. This irritates the soft tissue that is between the vertebras which is registered as pain. This is a temporary condition that will resolve itself with rest and the use of a cough suppressant.
Other sources of upper back pain can originate from your shoulder area. Not only do injuries cause this pain but also over use such as repetitive motion of a job like assembly line workers experience. The constant twisting and lifting, even light weights have an accumulative effect. This is especially acute when first starting this type of job.
Treatment for soreness of the muscles from repetitive motion varies but rest is the best way to resolve this source of pain. For those of you that do not have this choice, a good massage will work wonders and feel really good. In time your muscles will become accustomed to the motion and the sharpness of the pain will go away.
For those of you that want or need immediate relief, the ancient Chinese art of acupuncture is a treatment that has been shown to work. Acupuncture does release the stress and strain that the muscles and nerve pressure points have built-up.
For those workers that either do not like needles or have the time to visit an acupuncturist, there is temporary relief in over the counter medicine. This would include the anti-inflammatory type pills like aspirin, Tylenol and ibuprofen.
For those that have had persistent upper back pain sometimes chose a more invasive type of treatment. This is when an injection of an epidural steroid is used. This is uncommon except for professional sport athletes.
If you are over the age of 50 and female, the source of your upper back pain can be from osteoporosis. This is where the cause of the pain is from the compression of one’s vertebra from a fracture due to the decreased calcium level in your bones. Calcium supplements can help to alleviate further decay of the bone mass but the damage that is already done is not repairable. The most common treatment for this upper back pain is pain medicine and rest. Some relief is found when the spine is slightly stretched. This is done when the weight is taken of the spine with a harness. If this is chosen as your preferred relief, a physician should be consulted first.
For those of you with upper back pain, there is relief.
