One of the most common ailments in today’s world is back pain. The upper back neck pain is one of the worst because of its placement. You cannot even slightly move your head without feeling the pain. This area of your body is where so many joints, tendons and nerves are all concentrated. They all must be in proper working order or upper back neck pain can occur.
A common cause of this pain is a neck sprain. This is considered an acute injury that is the result of trauma to the muscles or tendons in the upper back or neck region. The cause can be from a sports activity, an accident, fall or even a quick jerking motion of the head. The result could have stretched out a ligament, tendon or muscle that is now inflamed.
The degree of severity of the sprain will help determine the proper treatment. For minor sprains and ice pack on the sore region will reduce the swelling. By not using the area that has been injured, the area will be given the necessary time to heal. After the initial swelling is reduced and the injured area is stabilized, a heat pack should be applied. This will speed up the healing process. For immediate relief an over the counter pain reliever can be used. Minor sprains heal rather quickly if treated immediately. For some a day or two is all that is needed.
If the sprain is more severe, immobilization might be required. If numbness is occurring in parts of your extremities, a physician should be consulted immediately. The cause could be from the swelling of a joint or muscle around a vertebra, which is applying pressure to your nerve system. This should be address quickly to ensure permanent damage does not occur. Ice packs again should be used to reduce the swelling.
For those of you with chronic upper back neck pain, there are other treatment options. One that is very common with professional athletes is cortisone injections. This addresses the short term pain, but long term relief may not be in reach. If the cartilage that was between your bones been damaged or is gone, the bones will continue to rub against each other and be a constant source of pain. Unlike when this occurs in the hip region and a hip replacement can be done, the neck region cannot be replaced. Muscle relaxers have shown signs of reducing the friction between bones and can bring limited relief, but addiction to these and pain medicine is one of the dangers that should be avoided.
If you are still able to be mobile, mild exercise should be done. By raising your heart rate, your blood flow will increase which has been proven to reduce aches and pains in sore regions of a person’s body. Non-impact exercises are easy to do and will not damage your already sore and injured joints. Walking and swimming are two that are highly recommended but stretching the muscles and yoga has also shown positive results.
Understanding your upper back neck pain will help you find the proper remedy to help relieve your pain.
