Upper back shoulder pain is a very common occurrence in athletes. This is caused by repeated stress and strain in the upper body and shoulders to constantly perform at top efficiency
The end result could be a number of things but one of the most common is a acromioclavicular joint problem. Sometimes this is referred to as the A-C joint. This joint is at the top of the shoulder where the acromion or shoulder blade and the clavicle or collarbone, are connected.
For sports enthusiast this is the joint that has ruined many quarterbacks and pitchers careers. The reason for the injuries could be just normal wear and tear. For some athletes that are at the star positions, throwing the ball has been an occupation for two decades. This throwing action or at times whipping action puts an incredible amount of force on this joint. The result is after time will be the breakdown of the natural cartilage between the bones. This is sometimes referred to as the onset of arthritis. For non athletes this can occur in the later stages of life.
Other injuries to this joint that can cause upper back shoulder pain is a tear or rupture to the A-C ligament. This is extremely painful. If the tear is slight, minor surgery and rest could repair it and the athlete could return to the sport. A severe tear or rupture is a career ending injury most of the time. This injury can actually be seen on the exterior of the skin by the presence of a lump on top of the shoulder. This injury is recoverable from but the shoulder is never the same again.
There is also a fibrous tissue that connects the muscles and tendons of the shoulder region. When this becomes stretched and torn or degraded it is referred to as Adhesive Capsultis. This is more common in people in the middle years of life. If you feel pain in your shoulders and you are over the age of forty, this is what you should be investigating. This is especially true if it interferes with your sleeping.
If you use your shoulders at work in a repetitive motion and pain is emanating from the joints, you may be a victim of bursitis or tendinitis. The reason for your pain will be from the loss of the fluid that was present in your bursae sacks. These little sacks are what cushion the area where contact of your tendons and the bone are present. Your pain will become more intense as the tendons become inflamed from direct contact and unusual motion that they are not accustomed to. The more you push yourself to live with the pain, the worse the swelling will get. This will also increase your pain and recovery time. You can recover from this with ultrasound treatments to the injured area and ice packs to reduce the swelling. Rehabilitation will be necessary to help teach you your new limitation of movement and your upper back should pain will be alleviated.
