There are several reasons a person will get lower left back pain. One of the causes that are specific for lower left back pain is an irritated or inflamed colon. The colon is also called the large intestines and runs down the lower left side of your back and is connected to the sphincter muscle. When inflamed the pain can be excruciating. Some of the symptoms are frequent bowel movements and diarrhea. The reason for these unusual bowel movements is due to the colon inability to absorb moisture.
The main cause of this is from a disease called ulcerative colitis. Not only is the colon inflamed but sores also develop. This will become apparent when blood appears in the stool. The sores are just like stomach ulcers, just little holes in the colon’s lining or walls. The ones that are bleeding are the more serious ones.
There has been a lot of research done in an attempt to find the cause of this condition, but a precise cause has yet to be found. One of the leading suspected causes is the use of Accutane. This chemical is thought to trigger the TNF-alpha into over production in your body. While this is still just suspect, Accutane is known to cause inflammatory bowel disease, and rectal bleeding, Crohn’s Disease, procititis, entercolitis, lleocotitis, lletis bleeding, sigmoiditis, premature epiphyseal closure, desiccation of the spine, desiccated disc, optic neutiritis, cirrhoses and hepototxicity.
This chemical was originally designed to treat severe acne, recalcitrant and nodular acne. While it did dry up the outer skin nicely, the devastating side effects can linger for many years.
If this is suspected to cause your pain, many physical check up should be performed by qualified physicians. The reason for so many is because so much is not known about this disease and several opinions should be sought. One of the tests that will have to be repeated for years to come is a colonoscopy. This is an invasive procedure but necessary. The doctor will actually be able to see the damage that has been done to your colon for not only better prognosis but also how the disease is progressing.
Another common procedure will be a Barium enema x-ray of the colon region. This will allow the physicians to see the exact location of the ulcers, polyps and any other abnormality that might be present.
Unfortunately there is no cure for this disease. There are three options for those that suffer from this type of lower left back pain. The first is to do nothing and suffer. The second is to take medication that will alleviate the symptoms. Since the exact cause is not known, the medication is administered by trial and error until the desired results are obtained. The main danger with this is that some of the medicines are very poisonous. The health benefits should be weighed against the possible side effects. The last is surgery to remove the infected part of the colon. Most of the time this is avoided but has been necessary to relive a person’s lower left back pain.
