Lower back pain is a problem that a majority of blue collar workers around the world have in common. Some of them that have chronic lower back pain refer to it as their lumbago, which in some circles is a kind of joke, since most workers that lift for living have it.
There are different reasons there are so many people that are afflicted with this condition. But the most common reason is a combination of bad lifting techniques and drinking beer to kill the pain of a hard day’s work. If you are one of those people that lift, stretch and strain all day moving sacks of grain, heavy boxes or even light boxes but in long continuous period, then the cure is possible and simple.
The first thing is to start lifting with your legs and not twisting your waist when holding the heavy objects. The lifting alone puts undue stress on the back muscles but the twist intensifies it. After doing this all day most workers knock down a few beers. This temporarily numbs the pain. But there is a side effect, a beer gut.
The beer gut and drinking the beer compounds the problem. The beer not only kills the lower back pain but also loosens the stomach muscles. What most manual workers are unaware of is that it is the stomach muscles that are the major source of support for the back. Back muscles do some back support but they have limited strength.
The reason most young men can lift heavy loads incorrectly is because they have abs that are described as wash boards. I know, I was one of them. As I grew older, like most workers out there, I kept trying to lift heavy objects. In time the beer I was consuming loosened my stomach muscles and now I have a lower back pain.
The best medicine to alleviate lower back pain is start doing sit ups. Even if you keep drinking beer it is ok as long as you do your daily sit-ups
For those of you that have a girlfriend or significant other, ask them to massage your lower back muscles. This will help relax the muscles. If you feel your lower back muscles twinge or twitch, that is due to being overly tired. This is the source of the pain. A massage will temporarily relieve the strain that you have placed on the muscles.
In time the muscles will repair themselves if they are not over worked. Proper lifting techniques are a mandatory requirement along with sit-ups to avoid prolong or chronic lower back pain. If you continue to drink beer to kill the pain and let that gut hang out, you will have a future of pain. Not only will your gut become unsightly but it will take more beer to kill the pain.
In time most workers come around to taking care of their body. Some have done so much damage that a back brace must be worn before lifting any object. They resemble a woman’s girdle. Do you wish to wear a girdle in public or while at work?
If not take care of your lower back muscles and your lower back pain will go away.
