While most back pain originates from the over use of back muscles, a stained back muscle or improver use of a back muscle, these are not the usual source of chronic back pain. Treatment is very different for this long term pain. Your treatment will be different because the source of your pain is very different.
Most chronic back pain is from a systemic or rheumatic illness. The exact spot of the pain from these are hard to pin point because of the nature of it. Most of the time, your pain will begin to radiate out from the source. It will feel like it covers your entire back. The point of pain will not grow just what you feel will.
Other causes for chronic back pain are spinal osteoarthritis, spondylitis and compression fractures of vertebras. All of these need to be properly diagnosis by a qualified physician.
Proper diagnosis is required for the proper treatment to be decided on. A thorough examination will be required and possibly during this you will receive a shot of steroids or anesthetic into the soft tissue. This will help pin point the exact source or cause of your pain. Other procedures you should be prepared for are the use of the different imaging machines like x-ray, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging or MRI and computerized tomography or a CAT scan.
Once the chronic back pain has been properly diagnosis, the treatment for the pain can commence. Like most back pain treatment, over the counter pain relievers is usually the first step. If this path is chosen for long term relief the warnings must be adhered to. Switch from one to another in an alternating fashion. Each one has its own dangers if too much is taken like Tylenol, it causes liver damage. If a stronger pain killer is recommended there is always a chance of addiction. If at all possible, this should be avoided. Trying to kick the habit of pain medication is very difficult and for some not possible.
Your chronic back pain treatment can also include back surgery or the use of a mechanical back brace. When it comes to these two, the awkward looking brace is preferable to use for me than surgery, but that choice will be yours to make.
For some patients a periodic shot of steroids into the problem area can do wonders. If this is a choice given to you, be ready for instances when the doctor hits a nerve with the needle. The needle is 5 to 6 inches long and is going into an area where there is a high concentration of nerves. This discomfort will not last. It also will not be pleasant during the procedure.
Last there are certain exercises that you can do. The most effective exercises are the ones that strengthen the back muscles. This will help you manage the pain. Along with the exercises most doctors recommend the loss of some weight. The main reason for this is that an overwhelming majority of patients with chronic back pain are overweight. This is a contributing factor to their problem at times.
The proper chronic back pain treatment will be chosen after the right diagnosis is determined by a qualified physician.
