The most common source of your back neck pain is from damage to the soft tissues located in your neck. Very often medication and chiropractic manipulation are the main sources of non-surgical back neck pain relief. If your neck pain is accompanied by stiffness or numbness to your extremities then there might be a more serious problem.
These more serious problems could be from cervical degenerative disc disease or a herniated disc, both of which are different types of problems and require slightly different methods of relief.
Cervical degenerative disc disease has a common symptom of a stiff neck. This is generally caused by twisting or turning of the neck in a radical motion. This is also caused by normal wear and tear over the years. The main source of this neck pain is from the disc in the neck degenerating. Not only will you experience a stiff neck but at times a nerve becomes pinched. This is the source of the numbness in the extremities, usually an arm. If this is suspected a physician should be consulted. Test can be done like x-rays, MRI or a CAT scan to properly diagnose this condition.
If you are diagnosis with cervical degenerative disc disease, there are non-surgical treatments. The application of an ice pack and over the counter medication to reduce the swelling and control the pain is very often the first recommendation. It is also at times recommended that the neck be placed in traction or other applications to take the weight off the neck and give the disc time to repair itself. Exercises are recommended to help strengthen the muscles around the neck to bring relief. Chin to chest stretches along with side to side swivels is common. Cervical pillows can bring relief while you are sleeping so your neck will not be so stiff in the morning. If the pain becomes chronic, then surgery can be performed. This is where the fusion of two or more discs is done to eliminate the back neck pain. Relief will come but the cost will be reduced mobility of the head and neck.
A herniated disc is very common for those of you in the age group of 30 to 50 years old. This is where material from a disc pinches the cervical nerve that sends shooting pain down the nerve. Numbness and tingling sensation can be felt all the way to your fingertips. Your muscles may also feel weak.
The most common non-surgical treatment is the management of the pain and rest. The medication most often suggested is Tylenol. Along with the rest there are certain braces that can be worn to help relieve the pressure off the neck to allow the herniated discs to heal faster. In some cases a physician will recommend an epidermal steroid injection or selective nerve blocking chemicals to help manage the pain. Limiting your activities to reduce any possible stress to the neck area is highly recommending including limiting the amount you may lift to 50 lbs or less. These solutions will help you find back neck pain relief.
